Below are detailed instructions explaining how to disable unneeded auto-formatting in Microsoft Word. ย The default Word settings issues for the proofreaders during the proofing process and, as a rule, should never be used in a Transcript.

To open the Autocorrect / Formatting Options window:

  1. File > Options

  2. Select "proofing" on left menu

  3. Click "AutoCorrect Options..." button to open window

On the "AutoFormat" tab, update the following:

  • Hyphens (--) with dash (โ€”): OFF

  • Set Left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces: OFF

  • "Straight Quotes" with "smart quotes": OFF

Next, on the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab, update the following:

  • "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes": OFF

  • Hyphens (--) with dash(---)
