By default, hidden characters in MS Word are not displayed. In some cases, you may need to display these hidden characters. For example, if you're working on cover pages or headers. Managing these pages / sections without displaying hidden characters is difficult, almost impossible.
To display these characters, inside MS Word's Quick Access toolbar there a small Paragraph mark icon (below):
Once selected, the button will turn grey (below)
The document will now display all hidden characters. This includes, section breaks, returns, tabs and spaces. See image below of a blank Indiana Cover Page template:
This setting is specific to a document so you'll need to do the same on other documents if needed.
